  23. INTRODUCTION.
  24.  
  25. POSTER 5 is the Windows 95 32-bit version of the popular Windows shareware 
  26. program for making big posters, signs, and banners. Posters can be up to 
  27. 9 feet by 9 feet at 300 DPI, even bigger at lower resolutions.
  28. Poster combines the best features of word-processing,
  29. graphics, and desktop publishing with features especially tuned for 
  30. big posters and banners. This includes complete flexibility in the placement 
  31. of graphics, a full set of drawing tools and over 100 special effects 
  32. (like 3D, rotate, and arch) for text. All text and graphics are enlarged 
  33. and tiled over multiple pages. POSTER supports all True-Type and ATM 
  34. fonts, and imports graphics from BMP and WMF files, as well as from the 
  35. Clipboard and OLE applications. POSTER supports full color, and most 
  36. Windows-compatible printers.  Full support is there for non-standard 
  37. poster and paper sizes.

  39. POSTER is great for a wide variety of projects at work, school, home, or 
  40. clubs:
  41. 1. Creating large posters for presentations, projects, charts, etc.
  42. 2. Creating large signs for advertisements, announcements, etc.
  43. 3. Creating banners for special events, etc.
  44. 4. Enlarging pictures, charts, etc. for display.

  47. INSTALLATION.
  48.  
  49. If you have unzipped the files, then you have practically installed the 
  50. program.  
  51.  
  52. To install the program:
  53. 1. Create a temporary directory (like \TEMP) and unzip the POSTER5.ZIP
  54.    file to that directory.
  55. 2. Run SETUP from the temporary directory.
  56.    c:\TEMP\SETUP
  57.  
  58. The package consists of the following files:
  59. 1. This README file.
  60. 2. Example and tutorial files.
  61. 3. POSTER.EXE, which is the poster program itself.
  62. 4. POSTER.HLP, which is the on-line help file.
  63. 5. Several BORDERx.WMF border files.  These can be imported using
  64.    the Page->Border->From File command.

  69. PRINTER DRIVER NOTES:
  70.  
  71. HP680C (and 682C):
  72. To print Continuous forms (banner paper) correctly, you MUST have 
  73. version 9 of the printer driver.  Version 8 does not properly handle
  74. characters that cross page boundaries in banner mode.
  75. When printing banners, be sure to set the Paper mode to Banner in 
  76. the printer setup dialog box.  Also, make sure the 'continuous forms'
  77. box is checked in the POSTER Print dialog box.
  78.  
  79. CONTINUOUS FORMS:
  80. Poster supports continuous forms on dot matrix, the HP680, and any
  81. other printer that accepts continuous form paper. Be 
  82. sure to check the continuous forms box in the POSTER Print dialog box.
  83. You may use continuous forms for posters or banners.  Using it for
  84. posters causes your poster to be printed in continuous strips, reducing
  85. the amount you have to paste together.
  86.  
  87. PROBLEMS WITH PAGE EJECTS WITH CONTINUOUS FORMS:
  88. If your printer page ejects while trying to print continuous forms,
  89. you must adjust the page size.  EACH time you print:
  90. 1. Select File->Print.  Then select Continuous Forms.
  91. 2. Click on "More"
  92. 3. Adjust the field "Override Paper Size, Height" to a smaller value.
  93. 4. Select OK.
  94. 5. Select OK.
  95. You may have to adjust this field up or down to get Poster to go to the
  96. very edge of the current page, and then begin the next page at the very top of
  97. the next page.

  99. PROBLEMS WITH DROPPED CHARACTERS AT PAGE BOUNDARIES:
  100. If POSTER drops characters at page boundaries, try checking 
  101. the box marked "Method A" in the PRINT dialog box. This should work ALL 
  102. printers.  If this still doesn't work, try "Method 
  103. B" or "Method C".  Also, see the special setup instructions below.

  106. LASERJET III USERS.
  107. If the posters you print are missing characters at page edges, then do 
  108. the following:
  109. 1. Select "Method A" in the Poster Print Dialog box.  Also, be sure your 
  110.    printer is set to 300 dpi.  If A doesn't work, try B or C.
  111. 2. If this doesn't work, or it is too slow for you, install and use the 
  112.    Laserjet II driver. 
  113.  
  114. LASERJET 4 USERS.
  115. To successfully print posters, you must configure your printer as 
  116. follows:
  117. 1. Select "Printer Setup":
  118. 2. Set resolution to 300 dpi. (At 600dpi, printing takes a very long 
  119.    time, and may hang the printer.)
  120. 3. Select "options". 
  121. 4. Select "Graphics Mode" = "raster", "Graphics Quality"="high", and
  122.      check "print true-type as graphics".
  123. 5. If posters still do not print properly, then in the PRINT dialog box, 
  124. check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always work.  If it fails,
  125. try Method B or C.
  126.  
  127. POSTSCRIPT PRINTER USERS.
  128. POSTER cannot always automatically switch a postscript printer from 
  129. portrait mode to landscape mode.  If  "Print Preview" shows the printer 
  130. to be in the incorrect mode,use the "Print Setup" menu item to manually 
  131. select the proper mode.

  133. If you get postscript errors, or you are loosing characters at page 
  134. boundaries:
  135. 1. From the control panel, select Printers, then select 'Setup.
  136. 2. Select "options", then select "advanced".
  137. 3. Select "print true type fonts as" "Bitmap (type 3)".
  138. 4. Close the control panel.
  139. 5. Start POSTER.
  140. If posters still do not print properly, or print too slow, then in the 
  141. PRINT dialog box, check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always 
  142. work. If it fails, try Method B or C.

  145. SLOW PRINTING.
  146. Sorry, but Windows printing is s..l..o..w.  I have no good solution for 
  147. this.  Be sure to verify your poster with "Preview" in the "Print" 
  148. dialog box.  Then, have patience while it prints.

  230. POSTER is shareware. If you try this program, find it useful, and 
  231. continue to use it, you are expected to register. The fee is only $16. 
  232. (plus $2 shipping, $4 overseas), which is really quite reasonable for
  233. a program like POSTER.

  235. Unregistered users are limited to printing 10 posters. When you register,
  236. you are entitled to unlimited support, future
  237. versions, and a free disk full of fancy borders.  You wil receive the 
  238. registration code immediately via email, which will remove the 10 poster
  239. limit. (Be sure to include your email address). To register:

  282. DEINSTALL  (REMOVING POSTER)
  283.  
  284. To remove POSTER from your system, do the following:
  285.  
  286. 1. Find the directory containing Poster.
  287. 2. Delete all files, using erase *.*.
  288.    Delete the file 'poster.ini' from your WINDOWS directory.
  289. 3. If you want to save the saved poster files, but remove the
  290.    program, then delete the files POSTER.EXE, POSTER.TXT, POSTER.HLP.
  291. 4. To remove the start icon:
  292.     Win95: Click on 'Start', then 'Settings', then 'Task Bar', then
  293.         'Start Text Menu', then 'Remove'.  Find the Poster entry,
  294.         highlight it, and then click on 'Remove'.

  298. USING POSTER.
  299.  
  300. To start using poster, simply double click on the poster icon.  POSTER 
  301. will start and ask you for the poster or banner format. After selecting 
  302. the format you want, it will present an empty page to you.  Just start 
  303. typing to begin making your poster.

  305. The POSTER install program also associates *.POS files with POSTER.
  306. Double clicking on a POS file will 
  307. automatically start poster with that file.

  314. Users of POSTER must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
  315. "POSTER is supplied as is.  The author disclaims all
  316. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
  317. the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.

  319. quential, which may result from the use of POSTER."

  321. POSTER is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  322. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  323. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  324. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  325. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  326. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  327. continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  328. useful and find that you are using POSTER and continue to use
  329. POSTER after a reasonable trial period, you must make a reg-
  330. istration payment of $16.  The registration fee will license one copy
